Prince Edward Island designated as a Top Rated coastal destination

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey is pleased that National Geographic’s Traveler Magazine has recognized Prince Edward Island as one of the top 20 coastal destinations in the world.

Minister Vessey said, "Traveler Magazine gave the Island top marks because of our unspoiled environment, unique cultural qualities and ecological stewardship. This is wonderful international exposure for the Island and it will let the world know that Prince Edward Island is a beautiful place to visit."

The November/December 2010 issue of Traveler Magazine rates 99 different coastal areas based on six criteria, including environmental quality, aesthetics and tourism management. The magazine gathered 340 experts in sustainable tourism, and related fields, and asked them to rate each destination. With a rating of 74, Prince Edward Island qualified as a "Top Rated" coastal destination.

"Islanders should take pride in our collective efforts at protecting our coastlines and building sustainable tourist destinations. Protecting our coastal ecology and preserving our unique Island culture will help the industry to thrive and succeed in the long term," said Minister Vessey.

Traveler Magazine is one of the world’s most widely read travel magazines. It has a focus on sustainability and adventure travel. The complete list of rated coastal destinations is available at http://travel.nationalgeographic.com.
