Prince Edward Island Companies Graduate From New Exporters Program

Twenty Prince Edward Island firms have completed 10 months of intensive study and training designed to provide them with the know-how necessary to compete in export markets.

The companies received certificates, marking their graduation from the New Exporters Training and Counselling Program (NEXPRO), at a ceremony in Charlottetown today.

"Not only have you successfully completed a challenging course of study, you are now better prepared than ever to apply what you have learned in the real world of international trade," the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and (Veterans), told the PEI graduates. "That means expanded commercial opportunities for you and your business."

"ACOA and its partners have made it a top priority to help small- and medium-sized businesses in Atlantic Canada enter international markets," Mr. MacAulay added. "That's because we know that every $1 million increase in exports leads to 11 new jobs in Atlantic Canada. However, less than 10 per cent of Atlantic Canada's small- and medium-sized businesses — the real source of new jobs and opportunity in our economy — are involved in export activity. And that's why it's so gratifying to see the commitment of time and resources you as business owners have invested in taking this program."

"More and more PEI companies are recognizing that selling their products and services in the global marketplace is essential for growth," said Wes MacAleer, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "Many businesses are reluctant to take that step because they lack the knowledge to overcome barriers such as making the right contacts, cutting the red tape and cultural differences that are often associated with exporting to other countries. The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to assist companies in the province gain the skills they need to enter these new markets with confidence."

NEXPRO is designed to provide smaller firms with information and training related to everything from writing and implementing an export marketing plan to dealing with customs brokers. After completing the study component, participating companies have the option to participate in an international mission to gain hands-on experience in a new market.

NEXPRO is jointly funded by ACOA and the four Atlantic provincial governments through the Canada/Atlantic Provinces COOPERATION Agreement on International Business Development. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and Industry Canada are also partners to the Agreement.

The Business Development Bank of Canada is responsible for delivering the program. Since its launch in 1994, NEXPRO has graduated 85 small- and medium-sized companies from across the region.
