Prince Edward Island Premier Robert Ghiz and Québec Premier Jean Charest have signed a new Cooperation and Exchange Agreement between the Government of Québec and the Government of Prince Edward Island with respect to the Francophonie.
This new agreement replaces an initial agreement reached twenty years ago by Mr. Robert Bourassa and Mr. Joe Ghiz, the respective premiers at the time.
This agreement provides for greater cooperation in numerous areas such as education, culture, youth, French language, the economy, communications, health and social services, early childhood, immigration, public administration, rural development, the status of women and justice.
“This new agreement will make it possible to update our cooperation objectives with respect to the Francophonie and will contribute to increasing the opportunities to cooperate within the context of the 21st century. It will allow us to contribute to the enhancement of the Acadian and Francophone community of Prince Edward Island,” stated Premier Robert Ghiz.
“Prince Edward Island was one of our first partners in the Francophonie area and the signing of this agreement will allow us to pursue a collaboration begun two decades ago between our two governments. This new agreement, better adapted to the realities of our era, will make it possible to propose cooperation initiatives in new key areas for the Francophonie,” pointed out Premier Jean Charest.
A Permanent Cooperation Commission will be responsible for the implementation of this new agreement.
