Price Change On Beveraged Alcohol

The Prince Edward Island Liquor Control Commission announces that effective June 1, 1998, there will be a price change on beveraged alcohol.

Retail prices of spirits will decrease by an average of 7.5% or $1.73 per 750 ml. Hon. Patricia J. Mella, Minister Responsible for the PEI Liquor Control Commission, states "this price decrease in spirits will enable the beveraged alcohol industry of PEI to be more competitive with our neighbouring provinces."

PEI Liquor Control Commission stores intend to adopt other initiatives to provide a better overall shopping experience. In addition to the lower spirit prices, scratch and save coupons, in-store draws for golf bags, travel bags, etc., and a draw at each store for two tickets to the Skins Game at Crowbush are some of the more popular "in-store" attractions this June, July and August.

Minister Mella stated, "it's all part of being competitive and providing Island residents with a modernized approach to merchandising beveraged alcohol."

Some imported wines will increase as a result of the current exchange rate of the Canadian Dollar on International money markets.

Domestic beer will increase by $0.20 per dozen due to an increase from the manufacturers which is directly attributable to their increased costs. Other Maritime Provinces received price increases earlier in 1998.
