Premier’s Annual Award for Diversity Leadership Presented to Janet Perry-Payne and to Child and Family Services Employees

A ceremony held in Charlottetown on June 15 marked the commencement of Public Service Week 2009 and the presentation of the Premier’s Annual Award for Diversity Leadership. Provincial public servants, representing different countries and cultural groups, participated in the “Celebrating Our Cultural Diversity” event as a way to share their heritage and celebrate our rich cultural diversity.

Premier Robert Ghiz recognized the work of provincial government employees demonstrating leadership in diversity by creating a diverse, welcoming and inclusive workplace. Two winners were chosen for this year’s award: Janet Perry-Payne, from the English as an Additional Language Reception Center of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development; and Child and Family Services employees, Department of Social Services and Seniors, who participated in the “Building A Healthy Relationship Project” with the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island. Premier Ghiz mentioned that diversity is a vital factor in the growth of our population, economic opportunities, and in enhancing our cultural mosaic. “Commitment to diversity is essential,” said Premier Ghiz, “as we work toward implementing social and economic development programs to address our future challenges.” The Premier congratulated all nominees for their leadership, dedication and contribution to diversity in the workplace.

The award was created in 2002 when the PEI Government adopted the Diversity and Equity policy. It is presented annually, and recognizes provincial public servants who have distinguished themselves through their leadership and outstanding commitment by providing exceptional services to clients or the public in accommodating a welcoming workplace, innovative ideas, and performing daily tasks within diversity perspectives.
