Premier Pat Binns will ask Islanders to mark the 60th Anniversary of D-Day by taking a moment to pause and remember the sacrifices of those Islanders who fought in the courageous battle of June 6, 1944.
“I am honoured, proud and eternally grateful of the Islanders who gave their lives and risked their lives so that we can enjoy freedom and peace,” said Premier Binns. “The debt we owe to these brave soldiers can only be repaid through our thoughts, prayers and remembrance.”
On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces launched the D-Day attack at Normandy, France. It proved to be a major turning point in World War II. Many Islanders participated in the battle, as part of the over 15,000 Canadian forces that landed at Juno Beach.
“It is important that all Islanders remember the grave sacrifice, not just on these special anniversaries, but every day,” the Premier noted.
In recognition of the monumental sacrifice, Premier Binns will be hosting a reception for D-Day veterans at the Charlottetown Hotel on Sunday, June 6, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Flags at government buildings will be flown at half mast on June 6 in observance of the 60th Anniversary of D-Day.
