Premier Proclaims Aids Awareness Week

Premier's Office
"The fight against AIDS is far from over, but great progress is being made in terms of public awareness," says Premier Catherine Callbeck.

On September 29th, roughly 400 Islanders are expected to take part in the Third Annual AIDS Walk on Prince Edward Island. For the first time, simultaneous walks will be held in both Charlottetown and Summerside.

"Events like the Walk are extremely important in the work of promoting community involvement and awareness of HIV/AIDS," Premier Callbeck said.

"I'd like to congratulate all participants - and most particularly AIDS PEI - for their willingness to encourage greater understanding of HIV/AIDS."

Nationally, approximately 60,000 Canadians are expected to take part in Walks in 60 cities and towns.

"This event helps to underscore the unnecessary sadness this disease has caused among far too many people," Premier Callbeck said. "During the Walk - and over the course of the day - we should all take some time to reflect on that sadness - and recognize the courage of those afflicted with HIV/AIDS, and the families and friends who must also deal with the disease.

"At the same time, the AIDS Walk should also remind everyone of just how preventable this disease is. For that reason, the community awareness and involvement that are emblematic of the AIDS Walk may help to prevent others from contracting this disease."
