Thanks to an event in Ottawa on this evening, Islanders will have an opportunity to further reflect on the Team Canada's exciting gold medal win in Women's Hockey at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

At a well-attended reception hosted by Premier Binns on Parliament Hill, the Premier proclaimed March 14, 2002, as "Cassie Campbell Day" on Prince Edward Island. The day is meant to be a tribute to the gold medal winner and Team Captain. Campbell was on hand to accept a formal proclamation from the Premier.

Binns proclaimed the day because Cassie Campbell is a relation of famed Island author Lucy Maud Montgomery and retains strong family ties to Prince Edward Island.

"Cassie Campbell has demonstrated tremendous leadership, perseverance and commitment to athletic excellence. Islanders are proud of their connection to Cassie and share enthusiastically in her gold medal achievement," said Binns.

In addition to an official framed proclamation, the Premier presented Campbell with a Team PEI hockey jersey.

Campbell is currently studying toward a degree in nutrition at the University of Guelph. She spends each summer on Prince Edward Island where her aunt and uncle operate the Anne of Green Gables Museum in Park Corner. The museum was where Lucy Maud Montgomery was married and is also where Campbell's father grew up. During the summer, Cassie instructs at Andrews Sport Growth Programs, Slemon Park.
