Holding the 2015 Acadian Games in Charlottetown is a great opportunity for young Acadians and Francophones from across Atlantic Canada to come together in Prince Edward Island to celebrate sport and their unique culture, says Premier Robert Ghiz.

“The Acadian Games is an excellent opportunity for Prince Edward Island to showcase its heritage and for athletes to embrace their culture,” said Premier Ghiz. “I want to congratulate the bid committee for its success in bringing this important sport and cultural event to Charlottetown.”

The Acadian Games (Jeux de l’Acadie) is an annual event that takes place in late June. It attracts thousands of Acadian and Francophone athletes from across Atlantic Canada. 2015 will mark the 36th edition of the Acadian Games and the first time Charlottetown will have hosted the event

“The Acadian Games are an important way for the Francophone community to come together and celebrate their language, heritage and culture, while promoting healthy lifestyle activities and sport,” said Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie. “I’m very excited that Prince Edward Island will once again play host to the Acadian Games so we can all witness the hard work and dedication of these tremendous athletes, coaches and managers.”

It is anticipated that more than 1,400 athletes, coaches and officials will participate in the event. In addition, Charlottetown will also welcome approximately 2,000 family members, friends and fans of those participating.
