Premier Ghiz Announces New Deputy Minister of Agriculture

Premier Robert Ghiz announced today that career public servant, Brian Douglas will be the new Deputy Minister of Agriculture.

Brian Douglas replaces Wayne Hooper who left the Provincial Government to join the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

“I am confident that Brian Douglas has the kind of experience and understanding of agricultural issues that will make him an effective deputy minister,” said Premier Ghiz.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Hooper for his service to the Government of Prince Edward Island and look forward working with him in his new capacity at ACOA.”

From 2003 to his most recent appointment, Mr. Douglas served as Director of Agriculture Resource Division. Prior to serving in that position, he was the Manager of Farm Extension services from 2000-2002 and Laboratory Manager from 1989-2000.

Before joining the Department of Agriculture, Brian worked for the Department of the Environment from 1979 to1989 where he began his career as an Environmental Technologist.

Mr. Douglas graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a concentration in Environmental Biology from the University of Guelph.

Brian continues to be active in the agricultural community, having served as Treasurer of the World Potato Congress and as Chair of the Canadian Agricultural Extension Counsel. In addition, he has co-authored scientific papers on Monitoring Soil Quality on P.E.I.

In addition to his involvement with the agricultural sector, Brian has served in a number of volunteer capacities in his community. Brian is the Past Chair of the Charlottetown Rotary Easter Seal Telethon.
