Premier Demands Retraction of Erroneous Guardian Story and Reconfirms Government's Commitment to Rural Hospitals

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns is demanding a full retraction of a Guardian news story today that erroneously suggests his government will replace rural hospitals with paramedics.

The Premier categorically denies making any statements that would suggest rural hospital closures. “It goes against the entire philosophy of my government,” he said.

The Premier said the story is based on erroneous information attributed to him and he is demanding the Guardian immediately retract those false statements.

“Our government’s mandate is to build and strengthen rural hospitals and that commitment has been the staple of my government’s platform since 1996,” said the Premier. “In fact, I reiterated that pledge several times during the year-end interview with the Guardian.”

The Premier has reviewed a tape of the interview and at no time did he suggest that his government would close rural hospitals.

“I have thoroughly reviewed a tape of the interview and at no time did I suggest that rural hospitals will be closed. I am demanding a full retraction of those false comments on the front page of tomorrow’s Guardian,” said the Premier.

The Premier said his government, like the other 10 provinces and 3 territories, are working to keep pace with rapid changes to health care. He said some different health care models will be implemented to adapt to new health care realities, but is steadfast in his commitment that, “rural hospitals play an integral role in the delivery of health care in Prince Edward Island.”

“Our government will continue to work closely with all partners to strengthen the delivery of health care in rural PEI and that appropriate health care WILL be provided in our rural hospitals,” said the Premier.

Premier Binns will be available for comment at 3:15 p.m., today, at his office located at 95 Rochford Street, 5th Floor of the Shaw Building.
