Premier Pat Binns joined university freshmen this morning at the University of Prince Edward Island for the annual Shinerama Kickoff. At the event, the Premier officially declared today, September 7, as “Shinerama Day” in Prince Edward Island.
Shinerama is a significant component of Orientation Week at UPEI. Freshmen at approximately 60 universities across Canada participate to raise awareness of, and funds for, Cystic Fibrosis. Last year UPEI students raised nearly $10,000 for the effort by shining shoes.
“UPEI students are to be commended for their commitment to supporting the search for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Shinerama is an excellent initiative to combine community service and school spirit,” said the Premier.
Money raised goes directly to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is the world’s second largest non-governmental granting agency in the field of C.F. research. The funds granted by the Foundation go toward improved care and treatment, seeking control over disease or a cure for it, and promoting public awareness of the efforts to cure C.F.
