Premier On Board For First Crossing

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns will be on board the MV CONFEDERATION today as the Northumberland Ferry Service begins operating.

The Premier will make the trip from Wood Islands to Caribou on the first crossing at 11:30 am, and return on the first crossing from Caribou at 1:30 pm.

Premier Binns says; "The ferry service is important to the Island economy, especially to many communities and businesses who benefit from the tourism traffic and the movement of goods facilitated by the ferry service. For many, the start of the ferry service signals the beginning of a special time of year on the Island."

The Premier says the service provides a vital link between the Island and Nova Scotia, and joint marketing initiatives between eastern PEI and the Pictou area of Nova Scotia have benefited both regions.

Truckers also welcome the operation of the service as it saves travel time and facilitates the movement of goods between the provinces.

"I want to congratulate the employees and all who are involved in providing and promoting the service, as well as those who use the ferry service which helps to ensure it remains a key aspect of our community."
