The Premier's Crime Prevention Awards were presented today by the Honourable Pat Binns at a ceremony in Charlottetown. The Premier's awards are presented annually to recognize individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to community safety through crime prevention.
"Over the last year there have been many reminders about how we cannot predict or control events unfolding in our world. We are affected by what happens to our neighbours, whether they are across the road or around the globe," says Premier Binns. "That is why it is very important that we stop to recognize those who dedicate their lives to creating a better quality of life for everyone."
Three individuals, one municipality, two organizations and one business operation were honoured with 2002 Premier's Crime Prevention Awards today.
Phil Arbing was honoured for his extraordinary contribution to community safety and the field of justice over many years.
Austin Boyd is a business operator who was recognized for the development of an Abduction Prevention Program for schools and private institutions and for the implementation of women's self-defence program.
Child Find PEI was also honoured for its awareness and public education programs related to child safety and for partnership with police services in searching for missing children.
The City of Charlottetown was honoured for its work in Family Violence Prevention. Its example will encourage other municipalities, employers and employees to better understand their role and responsibilities in stopping family violence within the community.
Constable John FitzGerald, RCMP, was recognized for his work on violence prevention in the school setting, and Constable Marie Josée Homsy, RCMP, was recognized for her commitment to working in her community. Both these officers have demonstrated the important role that police officers can play when they work with their community.
PEI's Race Against Drugs is honoured under the Children and Youth Category for providing youth with educational experiences that promote a healthy drug-free lifestyle.
"Those honoured today have inspired others through their efforts," says Premier Binns. "They have demonstrated their commitment to making the Island a safer and friendlier place for all who live here and all who visit here, and it is a pleasure to honour them today."
This year marks the 16th year of the Premier's Crime Prevention Awards.
