Premier Announces Support Measures for Southeast Asian Disaster

Premier's Office
As news continues to reach Islanders of the horrific devastation in Southeast Asia, Premier Pat Binns today announced measures to support the efforts of the Canadian Red Cross to provide much needed emergency aid to the affected region.

“It is difficult to comprehend the full extent of this disaster on the people of Southeast Asia. Islanders are known for their generosity and we as a government wanted to be able to facilitate and further encourage that outpouring of support,” said the Premier.

The Premier along with Community and Cultural Affairs Minister, Honourable Elmer MacFayden, and Minister of Development and Technology, Honourable Mike Currie, outlined three immediate measures of support:

-All Prince Edward Island Liquor Control Commission retail outlets will be accepting monetary donations on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross, effective immediately;

-All Access PEI sites located throughout the province will accept monetary donations to the Canadian Red Cross during regular business hours, effective immediately; and,

-The Government of Prince Edward Island is donating $20,000 to the Prince Edward Island Division of the Canadian Red Cross for emergency aid.

Premier Binns also indicated that the provincial government is offering to work with the Government of Canada to support any Southeast Asians who are displaced and come to Canada to seek refuge.

The Premier commended the hundreds of Islanders who have already taken the initiative to support the efforts of the Canadian Red Cross and other relief agencies. He also extended his appreciation to the staff and volunteers of the Prince Edward Island Division of the Canadian Red Cross and other relief agencies who have worked tirelessly over the past few days responding to Islanders.

“Islanders are deeply saddened by the devastation caused by this terrible disaster,” said Premier Binns. “Our prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones or who await word from the region on the whereabouts of family or friends.”

The Canadian Red Cross continues to support the relief efforts towards the affected countries impacted by the earthquake and following tsunamis. Needs assessments will continue throughout remote areas where transportation has been challenging due to damaged or destroyed roads as well as all other local infrastructure.

Water, water purification tablets, food, medical supplies and temporary shelter continues to remain the top priorities for immediate relief for those who have been affected. While priority is being placed on the immediate relief efforts, recovery efforts will likely continue for many years to come. The Red Cross was present within the affected countries prior to this recent tragedy and will continue to be there until there is no longer a need.
