Premier Announces New Arts Stabilization Funding Program for Prince Edward Island

Premier's Office
A major cultural initiative that identifies new funds for an Arts and Heritage Stabilization Program was announced in the Legislative Assembly today by Premier Pat Binns.

The program allows for qualifying arts and heritage institutions to take advantage of expertise, assistance and resources to develop capacity and to address long-term organizational needs.

"Advancing arts and cultural heritage is important for all Islanders, and it gives me great pleasure to make this commitment," said Premier Pat Binns. "This program will assist organizations in the development of the arts and cultural sector and provide increased opportunities to preserve and share our unique heritage with both residents and visitors."

This initiative is a partnership between the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Canadian Heritage, the Samuel and Sadie Bronfman Family Foundation and the private sector. The provincial commitment is $200,000 over a three-year period, and the program will commence as soon as other proposed funding is confirmed. Provincial funding begins this year with a commitment for an additional two years.

"Our contribution to this program is part of our renewed commitment to culture identified in the Provincial Cultural Policy which was released in the fall sitting of the legislature," says Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Elmer MacFadyen.

The Arts and Heritage Stabilization Program aims to strengthen cultural organizations by providing assistance to help organizations grow and prosper. It recognizes and supplements the extensive efforts being made by volunteer boards of cultural and heritage organizations. The initiative was brought forward and will be managed through the Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island.
