* Environment, Energy & Forestry [to Nov 2011]
Premier Pat Binns and Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry expressed condolences today to the family of Dave Biggar, a well-known Island conservationist, who died Monday.

“Mr. Biggar dedicated countless hours to hands-on work to improve the streams and rivers in his watershed, and he was a strong voice in public discussion on environmental issues – whether it was the future of our forests or the recreational fishery,” said Premier Binns. “He was a true advocate for our Island environment.”

“Mr. Biggar was the driving force behind the very successful efforts to rejuvenate the Trout River in western PEI and make this a valued community resource,” added Minister Ballem. “His passion for the river and the recreational fishery instilled an appreciation for our environment and inspired others to take an active role in their watershed community. His contribution will be greatly missed.”

Out of respect for Mr. Biggar, the PEI Environmental Advisory Council has postponed the public consultation meeting on community-based watershed planning scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, at the Royal Canadian Legion in Miscouche. The meeting will be held Wednesday, February 14, 7-9 p.m. For further information, call 368-5044 or 1-866-368-5044.

Mr. Biggar’s wake will be held Wednesday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Ferguson Funeral Home and Chapel in O’Leary, with the funeral Thursday in the Chapel at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trout Unlimited Canada, Prince County Chapter or the Cancer Society would be appreciated.
