Prince Edward Island Poet Laureate David Helwig invites the public to a reading from his forthcoming book of poems, The Sway of Otherwise.
The reading – which will take place on July 16, 2008 from 12:10 to 12:50 – is part of the Summer Noon Hour Concerts at the Kirk of St James Presbyterian Church on Pownal Street. Island pianist Frances McBurnie will also be performing during the June 16 program.
Since his appointment as Poet Laureate in January 2008, David Helwig has been developing a website for Island poetry. The website currently hosts poems by 63 Island poets, a substantial bibliography of Island poets and podcasts of Island poets reading their work. The downloadable podcasts include readings by the former poets laureate: John Smith and Frank Ledwell.
The site also offers student poets the opportunity to submit their work and currently contains writers from the Montague High School. The historical section features poetry by L.M. Montgomery, Milton Acorn and Joseph Sherman.
The Prince Edward Island Poet Laureate Community Website is at www.poetrypei.com
David Helwig’s newest book of poems, The Sway of Otherwise, will be published this fall by Oberon Press in Ottawa.
