Plebiscite Day in Prince Edward Island

Today is the first day of the four half-days of advance voting in the office of each electoral district returning officer. Ads have been placed in all daily Island newspapers listing each of the 27 returning officers and their respective office locations. Voting times are from 12 noon to 6 p.m. commencing today, Wednesday, November 23 and extending to Saturday, November 26.

However, if an elector would like further assistance in locating his or her voting location, they can do so on the Internet at http://vote.electionspei.ca.

Monday, November 28, 2005 is Plebiscite Day in Prince Edward Island with polling stations open in each of the 27 Electoral Districts from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The question on the ballot for the Plebiscite was approved by the province and presented by the Commission on PEI’s Electoral Future and is as follows:

“Should Prince Edward Island change to the Mixed Member Proportional System as presented by the Commission of PEI’s Electoral Future?”

After the close of the polls (7 p.m.) on Monday, November 28, Elections P.E.I. will list the election results live on the Elections P.E.I. website at http://results.electionspei.ca as they are reported to their office. The results will be calculated in two formats: (1) as an Island total and (2) as individual electoral district totals respecting the provincial threshold limits as outlined:

(I) At least 60% of the valid votes cast province wide would need to approve the proposal; and

(ii) At least 50% of the valid votes cast in at least 60% (16) of the provinces's 27 electoral districts would need to approve the proposal.

If an elector requires additional information, call Elections P.E.I. at 1-888-234-8683 (P.E.I. toll free).
