Island Quality Vegetables is looking for additional growers to supply its expanding markets for broccoli and cauliflower. Production of both crops has expanded significantly since the processing plant opened two years ago, and plant manager Julius Patkai says that growing markets for its products means new opportunities for growers. In the first year, the plant processed 90 acres of broccoli. That has increased to 325 acres of broccoli and cauliflower this year, and Patkai said there is still room to grow.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Mitch Murphy said his department, through its Processing Broccoli and Cauliflower Quality Production program, offers a financial incentive for distribution by Island Quality Vegetables to growers who contract with the plant. "The intent of this three-year program is to reduce the financial risk associated with new crop development and to encourage new opportunities for diversification by growers," said Mr. Murphy. "This program provides growers with the time to gain experience in producing consistent yields of a quality product."
Growers must produce a minimum of two acres in order to be eligible for the incentive, which is paid at the completion of harvest.
Patkai says the plant can provide a list of individuals to supply seedlings to interested growers for planting in late May.
"We are encouraging anyone interested to join our core group of growers and participate in the expansion of this industry," said Mr. Patkai. "There is significant potential in the marketplace, and to realize that potential we need to increase the supply of raw product to the plant."
Mr. Murphy said the incentive program was developed in cooperation with Island Quality Vegetables to encourage new and existing growers to improve productivity and to stimulate long-term growth in the processing broccoli and cauliflower industry.
"I would certainly encourage everyone who wishes to diversify their operations or begin production to discuss their interests with Island Quality Vegetables," said Mr. Murphy.
