As a result of requests from the general public and organizations such as the Tourism Industry Association, the Provincial Government has approved a pilot project permitting Sunday hours of operation for lounges, clubs and military canteens.
In making the announcement, Provincial Treasurer, Pat Mella, Minister Responsible for the Liquor Control Commission stated "This is a pilot project only and will restrict hours of operation on Sunday between 4pm and midnight. The project will run from now until September 30, 1997 and will be subject to a full evaluation. Facilities that choose to open will also be subject to the normal inspection services of the Liquor Control Commission to ensure compliance with the Act and regulations."
Ms. Mella says the change will bring Island laws in line with those in the other Atlantic Provinces, all of which permit Sunday hours of operation. Given the high demand for seasonal employment it is also expected to generate some additional jobs in the service sector and will cut down on the illegal sale of liquor through bootleggers.
A number of facilities already serve alcohol on Sundays under special permits and licenses from the Liquor Control Commission. The Minister says the matter has been under discussion for some time, and she believes the business community will operate in a responsible manner that will ensure the success of the pilot project.
