Personal Health Card Now Required For Seniors Drugs

Effective October 13, 1997, seniors will be required to present their Personal Health Card to have prescriptions filled under the provincial Drug Cost Assistance Plan. The previous green DCAP card will no longer be valid.

Health and Social Services Minister Mildred Dover advised that this change is the first step in a larger initiative to screen all prescriptions to prevent potential adverse reactions and promote more appropriate use of medications. The new requirement for seniors drugs is the first step.

"The new provincial Pharmaceutical Information Program will be fully implemented during the coming year to include all prescriptions and will have many benefits for Islanders. For example, it will reduce the potential for drug interactions, and will help pharmacists and physicians to prevent prescription drug abuse," she said.

Seniors are reminded to bring their new Personal Health Cards to the pharmacy when they are having prescriptions filled.

The Drug Cost Assistance Program (DCAP) is a provincial government program which assists Prince Edward Island residents who are sixty-five or older with the purchase of approved drug benefits.
