PEI Schools Will Open Early This Fall

* Education [to Apr 2008]
Prince Edward Island schools will be opening for students on September 2, 1998. Although schools in many other provinces open in August, this will be the first year Island students head back to school before the Labour Day holiday. The reason for a pre-Labour Day school opening in the 1998-99 school year is to provide students with the opportunity to meet the required number of instructional days, as well as to give students a two-week break over the Christmas holidays. The PEI School Act Regulations requires that students receive 185 instructional days each school year.

The current School Act Regulations were established following a study of the school calendar by a committee consisting of representatives from the Department of Education, PEI Home and School Federation, PEI Teacher's Federation, the French Language School Board, the Eastern School District and the Western School Board. Prior to the adoption of the Regulations, formal consultations were carried out with the school boards and other education partners.
