Tourism PEI and the P.E.I. Rocket have promoted Prince Edward Island at five different Quebec Major Junior Hockey League venues in the provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick over the past two years. In the past, the promotion provided a special prize package trip to Prince Edward Island and it continues this year with an additional two opportunities to win.
At each of the P.E.I. Rocket “away” games, Tourism PEI will provide an information card which will invite fans to visit a website where they find directions to enter the contest. On March 14, a winner will be determined from the online ballots for a week-long vacation package for two on Prince Edward Island. In addition to the grand prize, other promotional prizes are available at each of the seven cities which will be awarded during the game.
The “on the road” promotion takes place at the following P.E.I. Rocket games against:
Halifax Mooseheads -- January 20
Cape Breton Screaming Eagles -- February 10
Moncton Wildcats -- February 15
St. John’s Fog Devils -- February 17
Rimouski Oceanic -- February 22
Gatineau Olympiques -- February 24
Lewiston Maineiacs -- February 26
“The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League enjoys a strong following in some of our major P.E.I. tourism markets and, as such, we are very happy to be able to partner with the team to promote Prince Edward Island as not only a great hockey destination but also a great vacation destination,” said Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism. “This is a great way to take advantage of a captive audience to increase awareness of Prince Edward Island and grow our visitations for coming years.”
Research has shown that the Quebecers and Maritimers are attracted to many attributes of Prince Edward Island, not the least of which is our easy access by car. Survey responses indicate that, once they get here, the main attractions and activities that enticed them to the Island include seafood, camping, beaches, sightseeing, and the many experiences of the Acadian culture of the Island, all of which are promoted at the information booth.
The grand prize for the lucky winner includes: accommodations for five nights provided by Rodd Hotels and Resorts, including two nights at the Rodd Mill River Resort and three nights at the Rodd Brudenell River Resort; lobster dinner for two, compliments of New Glasgow Lobster Suppers; green fees and cart for golf play at both Mill River Golf Course and Brudenell River Golf Course, provided by Golf Links P.E.I.; a two-hour kayaking experience on the Mill River compliments of P.E.I. Provincial Parks; two passes for Founders Hall - Canada’s Birthplace Pavilion; a “passport” for entrance into the Museum and Heritage Foundation sites on Prince Edward Island and $200 Cdn in spending money.
Playing on the well-known fact that Islanders have the very best in hospitality and hockey, this encourages spectators at the hockey venues to take a part in the contest and also convinces potential travellers that Prince Edward Island should be their vacation destination of choice for 2006.
