March 9, 2012 * Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]Over 500 historic postcard images from the Provincial Collection spanning communities across Prince Edward Island can be viewed. Many of the postcards date from the early 1900s and continue on as late as the ‘70s and ‘80s. Laura Winters, who put the project together, said it was fascinating watching the history of Prince Edward Island unfold over a series of photographs. “A lot has changed in the province over the last century,” she commented, “yet many of the locations featured are so distinctive, so undeniably PEI, that the span of years hardly seems to have impacted them.” The postcards are arranged into collections according to the three counties, and each county opens into a number of sets that are given their community names. This makes it easy for people who want to quickly find their favourite Island locations. There are separate collections for the City of Charlottetown, the City of Summerside, and a General PEI collection for unidentified locations. PEI Museum and Heritage invites Islanders and Island fans alike to visit: www.flickr.com/photos/pei_museum and to comment with any memories or stories about the images shown. “It’s the enjoyment of this history by the people who love PEI that means so much to us. It’s the reason we put projects like this together,” said Winters. Media Contact: Mary Moszynski
