PEI Mission Staff Named for 2005 Canada Summer Games

The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for Sport, today announced the Team PEI Mission Staff for the 2005 Canada Summer Games to be held in Regina, Saskatchewan, August 6-20, 2005.

“The Mission Staff are an integral part of Team PEI. Their role is to ensure that PEI is prepared for the games through pre-game activities and planning as well as to provide valuable support to Team PEI during the games,” said Minister MacFadyen. “Each member of Team PEI was selected because of their involvement in sport as well as their community involvement and desire to help Team PEI enjoy a successful games experience.”

Members of the 2005 Team PEI Mission Staff are John Morrison, Francois Caron, Terry Bernard, Jennifer MacLeod, Nicole Phillips, Nick Murray, Mike Leslie, Kim Meunier, Sharon Horne, Carol White, Lynn Anne Hogan and Rick Anstey. The Chef de Mission and Assistant Chef de Mission were previously announced and are Ted Lawlor and Joanne Wallace respectively.

Mission staff are responsible for all administrative duties for the sixteen teams representing Prince Edward Island at the 2005 Canada Games. All information from the Host Society and Canada Games Council is disseminated in each province and territory through the Chef de Mission. Dissemination of pre-games information such as each sport’s technical package, logistics around travel to and from games, accommodation lists and sport schedules are some of the responsibilities. The mission staff also facilitate communication between athletes and media and parents at home.

“It is my pleasure to welcome each of these individuals to the 2005 Team PEI Mission Staff,” said Ted Lawlor, Chef de Mission. “I am confident that, with their assistance, we will ensure the readiness of Team PEI and assist each team and athlete in performing at their personal best.”

The 2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina, Saskatchewan begin on August 6, 2005. During week one, Team PEI will participate in baseball, basketball, canoeing, cycling, rugby, sailing, women’s soccer, women’s softball, swimming and tennis. During week two, PEI will compete in athletics, diving, field hockey, rowing, men’s soccer, men’s softball, volleyball and wrestling. The closing ceremonies will take place at Taylor Field on August 20.

2005 CANADA SUMMER GAMES TEAM PEI MISSION STAFF

Chef de Mission -- Ted Lawlor

Ted Lawlor will serve as Chef de Mission for Team PEI. Before becoming the Provincial Sport Coordinator in 1991, Ted served as a Regional Recreation Coordinator for the province. He has been a member of numerous mission staff for Prince Edward Island, having served as Chef de Mission numerous times. He is actively involved in sport as a volunteer, athlete, coach and administrator. He was a member of the Canadian National Baseball Team at the 1972 World Amateur Baseball Championships in Managua, Nicaragua. Ted resides in Stratford.

Assistance Chef de Mission -- Joanne Wallace

Joanne Wallace will serve as Assistant Chef de Mission for Team PEI. She currently works with the Sport and Recreation Division of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. Joanne has served as Mission Staff at three previous Games – Saskatoon in 1989, London in 2001 and Bathurst-Campbellton in 2003. She is involved in many many sports as a player, coach, administrator and volunteer. Joanne resides in Fortune Cove.

Baseball & Cycling (Week 1) -- John Morrison

Since 1989, John has been a Regional Recreation Coordinator with the Sport and Recreation Division of Community and Cultural Affairs. He has been a volunteer with minor sport for more than 30 years as a coach, administrator and parent. He is active with a variety of sports including baseball, basketball and cycling. John has worked with the Canada Games at the administrative level having served on Mission Staff for the past eight sets of games. During this time, he served as assistant chef for the 1993, 1995, and 1999 games and Chef de Mission for the 2003 games. John resides in Charlottetown.

Men’s Softball & Men’s Soccer (Week 2) -- Francois Caron

Francois Caron has been involved in sport most of his life. He currently works with the Sport and Recreation Division of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. He has been a coach at the community level and was an athlete at the 1993 Canada Games in Kamloops. He has served on the mission staff for the past two games in 2001 and 2003. Francois resides in Summerside.

Athletics & Men’s Volleyball (Week 2) -- Terry Bernard

Terry Bernard is an employee of the Sport and Recreation Division of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. He is an active participant in a variety of sports as an athlete, coach and administrator. He has coached and managed a number of teams including soccer, baseball and hockey at the house league, novice, atom, pee-wee, bantam and midget levels. He served as president of the Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association in 1998-1999. Terry resides in Charlottetown.

Communications (Week 2) -- Jennifer MacLeod

Jennifer is the Communications Officer for the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs. She enjoys participating in a number of sports noncompetitively including softball, volleyball and golf. She is a volunteer with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. This is Jennifer’s first experience as a member of the Team PEI Mission Staff. Jennifer resides in Clyde River.

Communications (Week 1) -- Nick Murray

Nick Murray is the Public Relations Coordinator for Sport PEI. He came to Prince Edward Island from London, England in 1997. He is a graduate of Leeds University. Before moving to PEI, Nick worked for BBC as a sports researcher from 1989 to 1997. Currently, he is Vice-president of the PEI Soccer Association and PEI member of Canadian Soccer Association Competitions Committee. Nick attended the 2001 Canada Games as manager of the men's soccer team. He is now coach of the Colonel Gray High School men's soccer team. Nick resides in Charlottetown.

Sailing and Women’s Softball (Week 1) -- Nicole Phillips

Nicole, originally from Nova Scotia, has chosen Prince Edward Island to be her home for the last 11 years. She is the Executive Director of Special Olympics PEI whose mission is to provide sport training and competition for persons with an intellectual disability. Nicole has always been involved in sport whether it is as a participant in ringette, soccer, curling or golf; as a coach in ringette; more recently as a volunteer in curling, Special Olympics, senior women’s fastpitch; as a current Board Member of Sport PEI; or as an avid spectator of hockey. She is Past-President of the PEI Curling Association, past Chair of the 2000 and 2001 provincial Scott Tournament of Hearts, and former Treasurer of the Charlottetown Curling Club. Nicole resides in Charlottetown.

Men’s Basketball & Swimming (Week 1) -- Mike Leslie

Mike is originally from Oxford, Nova Scotia and moved to PEI in 1993. He has coached high school basketball, volleyball, track and field and softball. He attended the 1987 Canada Games in Cape Breton, NS as coach for the women’s basketball team for NS. Mike was also a basketball official at the 1997 games. Currently, he is the Athletic Director and teacher at Three Oaks Senior High. Mike resides in Summerside.

Field Hockey (Week 2) -- Kim Meunier

Kim Meunier is the Recreation Director for the Town of Cornwall Parks and Recreation Department. She is Chairperson of the Grand Tracadie Community Council. She is a past member of the PEI Recreation Facilities Association. Kim has coached minor hockey, softball and baseball and holds her level two official designation in softball. She has attended seven Canadian Senior Women’s Fast Pitch Championships and served as Mission Chef at winter and summer Provincial Games events. Kim resides in Grand Tracadie.

Women’s Volleyball (Week 2) -- Sharon Horne

Sharon Horne has been the Executive Director for Rural Community Learning Inc. for the past four years. She is involved in numerous sports as an athlete, coach, administrator and volunteer. Her coaching experience includes minor hockey, softball and baseball. She has volunteered with such events as the Philidelphia Flyers Training Camp and the Atlantic Shield Women's Hockey Tournament, as well as several local curling spiels. She is President and Treasurer of the Western Community Curling Club, Secretary/Treasurer of the West Prince Sports Council, and Co-chair of the West Prince Baseball Association. Sharon resides in Alberton.

Wrestling (Week 2) -- Carol White

Carol White has been involved in hockey, as both an athlete and coach, for more than 35 years. She was a five-time Island champion in ladies dory rowing where she was never defeated. She was a member of the Murray Harbour ladies softball team which won the Eastern Canadian Softball Championship in 1982 and a member of The Whim Inn Selects, which won a silver medal in the Eastern Canadian Championship in 1995 and was named Softball Team of the Year. She is the recipient of the ADL/Sport PEI Volunteer award and is presently a volunteer with Northumberland Arena, the Brad Richards Celebrity Dinner and the Brad Richards Stanley Cup Parade Day (Chair). Carol resides in Murray Harbour.

Tennis & Women’s Basketball (Week 1) -- Lynn Anne Hogan

Lynn Anne Hogan is a Multi Sport Executive Director and past Program Director for Special Olympics PEI. She has served as Head Coach for Women’s Beach Volleyball at the 2001 Canada Games, Chef de Mission at the 2000 Canadian Special Olympics National Winter Games and Team Manager for the 1998 Canadian Special Olympics National Summer Games. Lynn Anne resides in Kensington.

Women’s Soccer (Week 1) -- Rick Anstey

Rick Anstey is involved in a number of sports including soccer, hockey, power lifting and football. He is currently a level 2 fully-certified NCCP soccer coach. Rick is a former president of the Sherwood Rangers, former member of PEISA executive and youth league, and former CSA representative for the province. Rick has also served as Chair of five national soccer tournaments, including the 2004 National Senior Championships. He is currently a member of the minor hockey council, Midget AAA League Coordinator and Referee in Chief in Sherwood. Rick resides in the Sherwood part of Charlottetown.
