PEI Liquor stores are being honored for their accessibility.
Access Advisor, a Charlottetown-based program that advocates for accessible businesses and communities, is presenting the PEI Liquor Control Commission with its 2015 Accessibility Award. The award recognizes excellence and leadership in enhancing accessibility on Prince Edward Island.
“Our PEI Liquor outlets are one of the truly public faces of government and must be accessible to all Islanders and visitors alike,” said Hon. Allen Roach, minister responsible for the PEI Liquor Control Commission. “This award shows that our stores are inclusive and welcoming to all.”
Access Advisor evaluated PEI Liquor retail locations Island-wide and found that all 20 stores were either partially or fully accessible. Accessibility can mean wheelchair ramps are present, doors have levers for handles and the tension on opening and closing is lowered, hand rails are installed, and assistance is available if needed.
“The PEI Liquor Control Commission has made a significant investment in ensuring accessibility requirements are met so that ‘everyone is welcome’, said Lacey MacIsaac, Access Advisor program coordinator. “We are proud to recognize this accomplishment with our Accessibility Award.”
