Plans are well underway for the province of Prince Edward Island to host the 10th Annual Canadian Scout and Venturer Jamboree to be held at Cabot Provincial Park from July 6-14, 2001. The province previously hosted the jamboree in 1989.
The 2001 Jamboree's national planning committee is anticipating that 12,000 youth, leaders and adult volunteers will visit PEI from across Canada and from numerous countries worldwide. Former deputy minister and educator Lorne Moase will serve as chairman of the national planning committee, which will be supported by numerous sub-committees. In the spirit of the scouting movement, Mr. Moase and the organizers will be assisted by over 2,000 volunteers.
Mike O'Brien, Deputy Provincial Treasurer, has been designated as the provincial government's official liaison for the jamboree. He will be assisted in his role by Bob Ramsay, Manager of Human Resources, Provincial Treasury.
Premier Pat Binns has pledged the provincial government's full assistance to ensure the 2001 Jamboree is a truly successful event. Premier Binns noted, "The jamboree represents a unique opportunity to demonstrate the province's support for youth initiatives and to showcase PEI's culture and tourism opportunities."
