The PEI Seniors’ Secretariat is using literature to encourage Islanders to celebrate and share the wisdom and perspectives of different generations.
To celebrate this year’s Intergeneration Week, the Seniors’ Secretariat donated copies of Dream: A Tale of Wonder, Wisdom and Wishes to public libraries, says Valerie E. Docherty, Minister responsible for Seniors.
“Every stage of life offers new perspectives and learning experiences. I believe we can all learn so much from each other, if we take the time to really listen to people of all different ages,” Docherty said.
Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson encouraged Islanders to find a copy of Dream at their local library.
“This award winning book will be an invaluable addition to the provincial library collection. It’s my hope that Island children will benefit from the messages about the importance of dreams and the importance of being persistent and following through,” Henderson said.
Intergeneration Week is an international event focused on bringing people from different generations together to build understanding and respect for the importance of social communities.
“It is a pleasure to have an opportunity to celebrate an event that recognizes the many and varied contributions that people of all generations make in our Island communities. Reading this book will inspire us not only to recognize the value of our dreams but also how dreams connect generations together and teach us the value of each generation,” said Seniors’ Secretariat chair Mary Hughes.
Dream is a winner of 10 national awards including International Reading Association Children’s Choice, Teachers’ Choice Pinnacle Award, Best Book Celebrating the Human Spirit and the Independent Publisher Award – Best Children’s Book.
The book features illustrations from 15 top artists and describes a story of hopes and dreams from childhood through to adulthood.
