Over 9000 Island Businesses Now Available At The Click Of A Mouse

A directory of over 9,000 businesses on Prince Edward Island is now on-line.

The Province of PEI has worked with the Government of Canada to create the comprehensive business directory, which is available at the official website for the province: www.gov.pe.ca. The directory contains the name, telephone number, fax number, address, and if available the e-mail address and website for the business.

"This website should be a great boost to anyone thinking about coming to PEI to set up a business, or anyone looking at PEI businesses as suppliers," said the Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology.

Islanders and Internet users alike can search the directory from their home, workplace, or one of 64 Community Access Program (CAP) sites across PEI.

"This site will be very useful for entrepreneurs considering establishing a business, for businesses seeking partners and suppliers, and for consumers attempting to find a business that provides a specific product or service," said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Solicitor General of Canada on behalf of the Honourable George Baker, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

The directory was prepared by combining lists provided by the following groups:

- Office of the Attorney General Corporations List

- Department of Provincial Treasury Vendor List

- PEI Business Development Inc.'s Directory of Manufacturers and Processors

- Human Resources Development Canada Directory of Businesses

- Central Development Corporation

- Baie Acadienne Development Corporation

- Active Communities Inc.

- Western Development Corporation

After the lists were combined, they were coded using the North American Industrial Classification System. This enables the list to be searched by type of business. In addition, users can search by community, individual telephone number, telephone dialing exchange, and by the name of the business.

The site also enables businesses to update any information that appears on-line by filling out a form. Islanders are also encouraged to check to see if their business appears in the directory and to register if it does not.

The directory may be accessed at www.gov.pe.ca/business/directory/. This project was provided with $59,000 from ACOA's Business Development Program and $50,000 from PEI Business Development Inc.
