Team officials for the 2009 Canada Games in Prince Edward Island will have an opportunity to hear Olympian Peter Giles talk about his high-performance career as a driving member of the Canadian kayak team.

Peter Giles was a triple bronze medallist at the 1991 Pan American Games and a member of the Canadian kayak team from 1988 to 1996. During his high-performance career, he helped his team record a seventh-place finish in the K-4 1,000-metre discipline at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and a pair of top-10 results at the 1995 World Championship in Duisburg, Germany.

Peter participated in the sport of kayaking at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) recently appointed him as Canada's Assistant Chef de Mission for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Following his athletic career, Peter remained active in the Canadian sport community. Since 2003, he has had extensive involvement with the COC, currently serving as an 'A' member with the organization. He previously served as a representative on both the COC's Athletes' Council and Awards and Recognition Committee. Peter is also the Vice Chair of High Performance for the Sprint Racing Division of CanoeKayak Canada. Peter Giles holds a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University in California and is currently a Principal Systems Engineer with General Dynamics Canada.

“Peter was not only successful in the area of sport but has carried this over into the corporate world and continues to stay involved with sport at its highest level,” said Alan MacAdam, Chair of the 2009 Canada Games High Performance Committee. “He has been a great role model to all Canadian athletes by virtue of his successful transition from sport to the corporate world.”

He will address the 2009 Canada Games coaches at an event on Tuesday June 26th, 5:15 p.m. at Rodds Royalty, Charlottetown. Following the address, Peter will meet with executives from PEI Canoe/ Kayak Association and the 2009 Canada Games Canoe / Kayak team officials and the athletes on the training team.

“We are pleased to have this opportunity to expose our ‘09 coaches to another successful entity in sport,” added Alan MacAdam. “We are pleased to have an olympian of Peter's stature address our team officials.”

The event is the second in a series of Success Breeds Success events leading up to the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island. Ken Bagnall, president of the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic addressed the coaches in January. Both events have been made possible by the 2009 Canada Games High Performance Committee.
