Winsloe West Royalty Soccer Club can now host larger outdoor tournaments and events as it has recently undergone clubhouse renovations. The new clubhouse was possible thanks to a combined federal-provincial-municipal investment of $180,000 under the Canada-Prince Edward Island Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
On hand to mark the grand opening were Mr. Bush Dumville, MLA (West Royalty-Springvale), on behalf of the Honourable Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, and His Worship Clifford Lee, Mayor of Charlottetown.
”It is exciting to see so many young people participating in this weekend’s soccer tournament and utilizing these new facilities,” said MLA Bush Dumville. “Recreational Infrastructure is an important investment in our communities and the health and well- being of all Islanders.”
With more than 500 users and visiting clubs, the new clubhouse was much needed. The structure includes washroom facilities, an officials’ area, a canteen service, decking for viewing games and a common area for results.
The official opening of this renewed soccer club encourages and promotes the growth of soccer on Prince Edward Island and will hopefully attract more players in the area to the Winsloe West Royalty Soccer Club. There are currently 6,000 soccer players on Prince Edward Island and this number is expected to increase over the next few years.
“I am very pleased to see this tremendous facility being officially opened here in Charlottetown. The sport of soccer has seen substantial growth over the last few years and those numbers of youth taking part in this sport are projected to increase. While it is important that we offer first-class venues for our sporting activities, we need to recognize and celebrate the many volunteers who make these sporting activities a reality for our youth,” said Mayor Lee. “I want to offer my sincere appreciation to the many volunteers connected to the Winsloe West Royalty Soccer Club.”
The Canada-Prince Edward Island MRIF is administered by the Prince Edward Island Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency through the Canada-Prince Edward Island Infrastructure Secretariat. Project costs are shared on a one-third basis between the federal, provincial governments and project applicants.
