North River Causeway Bridge Closes For Four Days Beginning Friday, August 22

Beginning at 3 a.m. Friday August 22, the North River Causeway Bridge will be closed to through traffic. The closure will remain in place until approximately noon on Monday, August 25. Alternate routes will be posted for road users.

The closure is necessary in order to complete the concrete pour on the bridge deck.

“It is my hope that road users will drive with caution while traffic is re-routed over those four days,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “Tourists, especially, may be unfamiliar with parts of the alternate route, so it’s very important that road users exercise patience and drive safely.”

For motorists travelling from Cornwall to Charlottetown, the alternate route is as follows: left onto Route 248 at the North River intersection on Route 1, right onto Route 2 at Milton, and follow Route 2 into Charlottetown. For motorists travelling from Charlottetown into Cornwall, follow Route 2 west to Milton, turn left onto Route 248 and then right onto Route 1 west, or turn right onto the Upton Road at the Maypoint intersection on Route 1, right onto the Charlottetown Bypass Highway, left onto Route 2 West, left onto Route 248 in Milton and right onto Route 1 west in North River. Motorists are also advised to avoid the intersection of Lower Malpeque Road and Route 2, as left turns onto Route 2 will be difficult with increased traffic.

Construction activities have remained on-schedule over the course of the North River project. Once the closure wraps up on August 25 lane reductions will remain in place until asphalt has been installed on the bridge deck. Construction activities are expected to wrap up during the third week of September.
