Do you know an individual, organization or employer who is working to improve the status of women on Prince Edward Island? If the answer is yes, then the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women wants to hear from you.
Nominations close February 25, 2000 for the Advisory Council's 7th Annual EQUALITY Recognition Awards, presented on International Women's Day (IWD). The awards recognize individuals, organizations and employers who have demonstrated outstanding contributions towards promoting the equality of women in Prince Edward Island. The Advisory Council recently sent out the easy-to-complete nomination forms to those on its mailing list and has already started to receive nominations. The general public is invited to submit nominations.
"There are women and men across this province working hard every day to improve the status of women in Prince Edward Island," said O'Brien. "We want to hear about them, their struggles and their accomplishments. You can help us recognize the women and men who help make Prince Edward Island a better place."
Past recipients of this prestigious award are Island women and men from all walks of life and a wide variety of groups and employers from across the province. Some examples of individuals and groups honoured over the years include: Individual ~ Estelle Reddin, Daphne Dumont, and Julie Devon Dodd;
Group/ Organization ~ The Federated Women's Institute of PEI, and L'Association des Acadiennes et Francophones de l'I-P-E;
Employer ~ Evangeline Community Health Centre, and Cooper Institute; and
Lifetime Achievement ~ Dr. Helen MacDonald, Hon. Marion Reid, and Marie Burge.
A candidate's commitment to women's equality may be demonstrated through a variety of activities, paid or voluntary. It could be within the community, school, workplace, church or organization.
The Advisory Council presents beautiful framed awards, featuring the ink drawing "Rise Up, Rise Up" by Island artist Elizabeth Vessey, in the categories of:
1) Individual; 2) Organization or group; 3) Employer or Company; 4) Lifetime Achievement
A committee consisting of representatives from the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Women's Network PEI, East Prince Women's Information Centre, the Federated Women's Institute of PEI, the Francophone women's community, and the business community will choose the recipients. Selections criteria and nomination forms are available at the Advisory Council office at 3 Queen Street in Charlottetown (Tel: 368-4510). Nominations must be received at the Advisory Council office by Friday, February 25, 2000. Advisory Council Chairperson Sharon O'Brien will present the awards at a new site this year. This year, the ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 8 (International Women's Day) at 12 noon at Kier's Gallery, 132 Richmond Street, second floor, in Charlottetown. All are welcome to attend the "Brown Bag Luncheon" event. Coffee will be served.
