Nominations now open for Human Rights Award

Islanders are invited to nominate someone for the third annual Award for the Advancement of Human Rights on Prince Edward Island says the minister responsible for the Human Rights Act, Doug Currie.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to honour a Prince Edward Island individual, group or organization who has, through their actions, promoted human rights and equality in our One Island Community,” said Minister Currie.

“Islanders who contribute to the advancement of human rights in their daily life, work, or volunteer commitments are role models for all of us and deserve to be recognized for their great example.”

The Award for the Advancement of Human Rights on Prince Edward Island was created by the PEI Human Rights Commission. The Award criteria reflect the priorities of the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act which states that every person is free and equal in dignity and human rights without regard to age, colour, creed, ethnic or national origin, family status, marital status, physical or intellectual disability, political belief, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or source of income.

The Award will recognize a contribution to the advancement of human rights in accommodations; employment practices; associations or organizations practices; publications, broadcasts, public displays and advertisements; services and facilities; or volunteer service.

This is the third year for the Award. Previous Award winners include Barbara Fanning in 2008, for her tireless work advocating on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities, and Ray and the late Pat Malone and Rev. Eric G. Fullerton in 2009, for their foundational work in establishing an Island chapter of PFLAG, (Parents and Friends of Persons who are Lesbian and Gay).

“The PEI Human Rights Commission must be commended for its efforts to increase awareness of and appreciation for the Human Rights Act and what it stands for,” said Minister Currie. “As our communities become more diverse and our workplaces more inclusive, understanding the harmful impact of discrimination is more important than ever.”

Nominations for the 2010 Award for the Advancement of Human Rights will be accepted until November 19. Forms are available at all Access PEI sites and online at www.peihumanrights.ca. The Award will be presented at a special celebration for International Human Rights Day, on December 10.
