Nominations Being Accepted for the Third Annual ‘Champions for Children Awards’

Premier's Office
The Premier’s Council on Healthy Child Development is inviting nominations for the annual Champions for Children Awards. The awards are presented to Islanders who have made significant contributions to the well-being of young children up to eight years of age and their families.

“I encourage residents to submit names of individuals, organizations, businesses and communities who have contributed to the well-being of young children and their families in Prince Edward Island,” said Premier Pat Binns. “The Champions for Children Awards recognize exemplary practices in Prince Edward Island which contribute to the healthy development of young children.”

Nominees will be considered who have demonstrated support, encouragement and sensitivity to the needs of young children and their families; encouraged parent, family and/or community involvement; been innovative and creative in addressing concerns; and developed partnerships and motivated others. Up to three awards will be presented this year. Nominees must be residents of Prince Edward Island.

In 2005, Champions for Children Awards were presented to Gwyn Davies for her commitment to children and families throughout her career and volunteer activities;

Bessie Dennis for her long-time volunteer commitment to the O’Leary Housing Authority, Family Housing Program and the community of O’Leary; and Donald Nicholson, for his long-time volunteer commitment to the Montague Housing Authority, Family Housing Program.

“Many extraordinary people and activities are supporting Prince Edward Island children and families everyday,” said Dr. David Wong, Chairperson of the Premier’s Council on Healthy Child Development. “The Champions for Children Awards provide an opportunity to show appreciation for these efforts.”

The awards are presented as part of the Healthy Child Development Strategy, which is monitored by the Premier’s Council on Healthy Child Development.

The deadline for nominations this year is May 31, 2006. Nomination forms are available on the Healthy Child Development Web site at www.gov.pe.ca/hcd or can be picked up at local Access PEI sites.
