Nine High School Students Receive Environment Bursary

Communities, Land and Environment
The Aubrey MacDonald Bursary is awarded to graduating high school students who have demonstrated leadership in the study of environmental sciences and sustainability, said Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell.

“I want to pass along my congratulations and appreciation to the nine Island students for their hard work and commitment to our environment,” said Minister Mitchell. “High school is an extremely busy time in your lives and as the provincial minister responsible for environment I am proud that you were able to find time during your studies for environmental learning.”

The objective of the Aubrey MacDonald Bursary is to reward student awareness of the opportunities that are emerging in environmental sciences for students with demonstrated interest and leadership skills. The awards honour long-time recycling depot operator Aubrey MacDonald of Aubrey’s Bottle Exchange who exemplified that determination and innovation could lead to a very successful commercial recycling operation.

"Creativity and innovation is an important part of our curriculum and it’s great to see our students putting those skills to use to help the environment," said Minister of Education, Early Learning and Culture Hal Perry. “I know these students will put their leadership skills to good use after graduation.”

The bursary awards are $1,000 per student funded by the Department of Communities, Land and Environment through the Beverage Container Program.
