A new all-in-one, portable, hand-held video player will give Island children access to educational video content not previously available at provincial public libraries, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve and enhance educational content and access to learning materials, and this new device accomplishes both those goals,” said Minister Henderson. “It’s a great addition to the public library service.”
The pre-loaded video player offers children portable access to award-winning programs from PBS KIDS, National Geographic, Sesame Street, TumbleBooks and many others. The collection includes a variety of popular education programs, animated books, and curriculum-based learning for pre-kindergarten through high school. Kids can sign a device out for a week at a time.
The public library service has purchased 38 of these new Playaway View devices so far and will add more to the collection every month for the next few months based on demand. When each new unit is ordered, public library service staff will select appropriate content to be pre-loaded onto the device, be it for small children, adolescents or teenagers.
“We expect these new video devices will be very popular with children of all ages,” said Minister Henderson. “These days children are exposed to a huge variety of new technology, and the addition of these new devices is a way for our libraries to keep up with current trends.”
