July 30, 2009 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]Beginning Friday, July 31, the Tyne Valley Bridge on Route 12 in Tyne Valley will open to all traffic. The structure was closed, and a major detour was in place, over the last three months as the Department of Transportation and Public Works replaced the old bridge. “The completion of this project marks a major improvement to highway safety for the residents of Tyne Valley and its neighbouring communities,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. ”I’m very pleased to see this project completed, and just in time for the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival.” Work began on the $900,000 project in early May. The new bridge is a pre-cast, three-sided, concrete arch, with timber abutments. The design is a vast improvement over the old bridge which had reached the end of its service life. The new bridge is longer by about three metres with improved sidewalks for better pedestrian access. Media Contact: Andrew Sprague
