Today, in anticipation of the United Nation’s International Day of the Girl, each of the Atlantic provinces will be participating in a Tweet-Out session that focuses on preventing cyber-violence against young girls, says Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Paula Biggar.
“The Cybersafe Girl initiative was launched on the first International Day of the Girl in 2012 as part of the annual meeting of Atlantic Provinces Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women,” said Minister Biggar, “This year we will be celebrating this important day by tweeting information gathered from resources developed through the Cybersafegirl initiative to help spread awareness about cybersafety.”
Tweets are directed at both youth and their caregivers. Examples of the tweets include:
• Empower yourself! Know the risks of being online. Make an agreement with your parents about how you can stay safe online.#cybersafegirl
• Know a victim of cyber-violence? Let them know it’s not their fault. Talk to a teacher or administrator and ask for help.#cybersafegirl
• Use everyday opportunities to talk to your kids about online risks. Use TV, games, or movies to start the conversation. #cybersafegirl
The Cybersafe Girl initiative provides young girls, as well as parents and educators, with information about how young girls experience violence and abuse on the internet as well as what can be done to prevent these incidents from happening. For more information, go to www.cybersafegirl.ca.
Since 2012, the United Nations marks October 11th as the ‘International Day of the Girl Child’. The day promotes girls' human rights, highlights gender inequalities that remain between girls and boys and addresses the various forms of discrimination and abuse suffered by girls around the world.
