October 4, 2001 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]A new set of traffic lights to be installed in St. Eleanors will help improve road safety at a busy intersection. The Department of Transportation and Public Works announced today that new traffic lights will be installed this fall in St. Eleanors at the intersection of South Drive and the All Weather Highway. This comes in response to community concerns to improve safety at this busy intersection. "Working with the City of Summerside, our data analysis shows that this intersection streams up to 12,000 vehicles through it each day. Installing traffic lights will complement the existing turn lanes at the intersection, enhance the safety of the travelling public and improve access for neighbouring businesses," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Don MacKinnon in announcing the work. St. Eleanors-Summerside MLA Helen MacDonald welcomed the announcement of the new traffic lights. "I'm pleased to see that the Province has responded favourably to the original request from the City of Summerside to address community concerns at this busy intersection and that by working together an acceptable solution has been found," said MacDonald. A tender call for the installation work has been issued and will close next week. It's anticipated that the new traffic lights will be installed and operational by early November.Media Contact: Don MacKinnon
