A new space within the Confederation Centre Public Library will create a welcoming area specifically for Island teenagers, thanks to a donation from the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.
“Our government is committed to improving literacy and recognizes the important role libraries play in achieving this goal,” said the minister. “This generous investment will help create a space that appeals to young people and encourages them to visit the library more often.”
The Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty has pledged $25,000 to create the space within the Confederation Centre Public Library. In addition, it will invest $5,000 annually over the next four years to purchase new library materials, including books, music and films, for teenagers.
“We are delighted to participate in this project with the Confederation Centre Public Library,” said Lewie Creed, president of the club. “We look to invest in worthwhile projects that build both literacy and community among today’s youth, both locally and internationally, and this project will certainly accomplish that. We look forward to a very effective partnership.”
The Confederation Centre Public Library is inviting teenagers to have a say in how the space is developed. Island teenagers are invited to drop by the library November 24 at 7 p.m. to discuss what the library means to them and share their ideas for the new space. Teenagers interested in attending the forum are asked to RSVP by emailing toleggott@gov.pe.ca or calling 368-4654.
The Prince Edward Island Public Library Service has 26 branches in communities across the province. The branches provide library services and resources to meet the diverse needs of all Islanders.
