New resource available to Island seniors to plan for aging in place

A new guide is available for Islanders to help them plan for living arrangements as they grow older, says Minister of Health and Wellness and Family and Human Services Doug Currie.

“Most adults would prefer to remain in their own home and community, but it is important to plan for any future arrangements which may be needed,” said Minister Currie. “The provincial government is committed to helping Islanders remain healthy and independent as they grow older.”

The guide, Thinking About Your Future? Plan now to Age in Place, was prepared by the Forum of Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors. It includes a step by step process that can be followed when making long term plans for living arrangements. It is based on experiences of individuals who have shared their thoughts about planning and developing their own plan to age in place.

“The guide can help people begin thinking about what they can do now to maintain more control over their lives as they age,” said Minister Currie. “This can include making an advanced care plan, identifying safety risks in the home, addressing financial affairs and considering social connections and supports and services available in their community.”

The guide is available on line at: www.gov.pe.ca/sss/aginginplace or by calling 1-866-770-0588.
