Honourable Michael Currie, Minister of Transportation & Public Works, has announced that his department has awarded a contract for the manufacturing of new vehicle license plates to Waldale Manufacturing Ltd. of Amherst, Nova Scotia.
The new plates will be available to the public in a choice of two design themes -- "The Confederation Bridge" or "Province House - Birth Place of Confederation."
The Minister said, "The launch of the new plates coincides with two significant events occurring in 1997: the official opening of the Confederation Bridge and the 150th Anniversary of Province House. The plate tastefully depicts a shaded picture of either the Bridge or Province House, the Prince Edward Island wordmark, Canadian flag, and will include a plate number."
The Department of Transportation and Public Works is working with the manufacturer to have the finished product available for sale to the public around the time the Confederation Bridge officially opens in June.
When available, Islanders will have a choice of purchasing one of the new plates for a fee of $5.00 or choose to retain the existing Anne of Green Gables or the plain Prince Edward Island plate. The Department, however, will be encouraging vehicle owners to replace deteriorated plates.
Sample plates will be available for purchase at $15.00 each or at a reduced charge of $10.00 when purchasing 10 or more.
