Premier Pat Binns says the upgraded flight services to Charlottetown announced by Air Nova / Air Canada will be a welcomed addition to the existing service.
"Based on our conversations and discussions with the airline, I believe that they have been working very hard to put a schedule together. It was a significant challenge to integrate the many aspects and we certainly appreciate the fact we are getting the summer schedule now, given the planning needs of the tourism industry," stated Premier Binns.
The 35 percent increase in capacity between Charlottetown and Halifax will address many of the concerns raised when Canadian Regional withdrew from the market.
The addition of a non-stop, daily jet service to Montreal is an excellent new opportunity for the tourism sector, and travellers in general given the new range of connections it will offer.
The decision to improve the direct jet service between Charlottetown and Toronto, by upgrading to a DC9, will approximately double the available seat capacity.
The Charlottetown-Sydney flight will be a direct benefit to business people travelling within the region, and could also benefit the Charlottetown airport, depending on the connections with the direct Montreal and Toronto flights.
"Overall, I have to say we are pleased by the schedule that is being offered, and in order to maintain quality air service, it will be important for government, the industry and the airline to keep the lines of communication open."
