New family physician for Souris

Health and Wellness
Dr. Tom Bronaugh will begin practice as a new family physician for the Souris area this June, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.

“The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to improving access to primary care within Island communities,” said Minister Currie. “The addition of Dr. Bronaugh brings the complement of family physicians in Souris to three and our Recruitment and Retention Secretariat is actively recruiting to fill the one remaining vacancy.”

Dr. Bronaugh received his American Board certification in Emergency Medicine in 2000, and he and his family relocated to Kingsboro, Prince Edward Island, from Maine in October 2011. Since that time, Dr. Bronaugh has been working as an Emergency Room physician at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

“I very much look forward to providing primary health care services to the people of Eastern Kings Health Network,” said Dr. Bronaugh.

Dr. Bronaugh will begin his family practice in Souris at the Seaside Medical Centre with Dr. Paul Berrow part-time beginning June 1, 2013, with the plan to be practicing full-time by September.

“As I travelled across the province last month talking with Islanders and taking part in community meetings, I heard many people from the Souris area talk about the need for continued primary care access,” said Minister Currie. “The addition of Dr. Bronaugh will provide a tremendous support for health care in Souris, and will provide a means to take many Souris residents off the patient registry list and into the care of a new family physician.”

Patients who are not assigned a family physician in the Souris area are asked to register with the Patient Registry by calling 1-855-563-2101.

The Emergency Room Group at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital has several candidates that are being considered for Dr. Bronaugh’s replacement, and they hope to make a decision in the near future.
