New Emerald bridge opens to traffic

A new bridge in Emerald will provide safe access to the community for residents and visitors, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey.

“Our government is pleased to make strategic investments to improve the safety of our roads and bridges,” said the minister. “The bridge is an important structure for the Community of Emerald, and I’m pleased we were able to complete this project in time for spring.”

The $800,000 project opens to traffic today. Some final work will take place around the site for the next week but will not interrupt traffic.

The original structure was built in 1952. The bridge was closed throughout the winter due to structural damage. Replacement of the bridge began in February.

Since 2007, the provincial government has replaced or completed major repairs on 48 bridges throughout Prince Edward Island, for an investment of $60 million.
