Teresa Mellish, a staff member of the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture and Forestry, has been elected as the new chair of the Eastern Canada Soil and Water Conservation Centre at its recent annual meeting in Moncton. She is Manager of the provincial Farm Practices Review Board and has been an active member of the Centre's Board since its inception.
Prince Edward Island hog and potato producer Barry Cudmore, Brackley Beach, was elected for a two-year term. He is the first producer to be nominated to the Centre's Board following its decision to include producer representatives at its last annual meeting. He will be representing Atlantic producers in general.
"I want to congratulate both Teresa and Barry on their elections, and I know they will make an outstanding contribution to the work of the Centre," said Agriculture and Forestry Minister Eric Hammill. "The work of the Centre is vitally important in the development and implementation of innovative solutions for sustainable land use practices."
The Soil and Water Conservation Centre, established in 1991 with representatives from federal and provincial governments, universities and the agriculture industry, provides information and promotes awareness on soil and water conservation issues.
