A new plasma cutter will help a growing manufacturer in rural Prince Edward Island continue to develop innovative solutions for the aquaculture and fishing industry and increase its international exports.
“The sustained prosperity of our province is directly tied to the success of small businesses like R&M Welding,” Economic Development and Tourism Minister Heath MacDonald said. “As we work to increase our exports and diversify our economy, we are proud to support R&M as they develop and expand into new markets.”
R&M Welding manufacturers customized products for the commercial fishing, aquaculture, and wind-energy sectors. Some of its products include aluminum dories, barges, and oyster harvesting equipment. Being closely linked to the aquaculture industry has allowed R&M to develop innovative solutions that have been adopted locally and internationally.
Innovation PEI has contributed $10,000 toward the purchase of the $90,000 plasma cutter. It is anticipated the new equipment will increase sales by 10 to 15 per cent per year and will allow the company to hire another full-time employee.
The company has grown every year since it started in 2007, with exports making up approximately 50 per cent of sales. The business currently employs six full-time staff.
“The addition of a CNC plasma cutter will allow our shop to produce higher quality products,” said R&M Owner Rodney MacDonald. “It will also help us increase productivity and allow us to be more self-sufficient.”
