The new $2.2 million addition to Miscouche Consolidated School was officially opened today by students, staff, parents, Western School Board representatives and government officials.
"Our government is committed to providing a high quality education to all Islanders. In addition to the very best teachers and quality curriculum, we also believe that it is important for students to have a comfortable learning environment," said Premier Pat Binns. "I can see that Miscouche Consolidated School is a wonderful place for students to learn, grow and make long-lasting friendships."
The Government of Prince Edward Island began its multi-million dollar Capital Construction Plan for schools in 1997/98. The plan is a multi-year strategy to enhance the infrastructure of 10 Island schools and provide for the ongoing maintenance of all schools in PEI.
The new 11,500 square foot addition at Miscouche Consolidated includes two classrooms, music room, multi-purpose room, library, and computer lab. The project also included some renovation work to the existing facility, such as a new gym floor, and enhancements to the parking lot area for improved bus access.
The Honourable J. Chester Gillan, Minister of Education, participated in the official opening ceremony and toured the new addition with students.
"Prince Edward Island is a place where learning is highly valued. Providing new and improved learning facilities for teachers and staff is one of the ways we help ensure a high quality of education," said Minister Gillan. "I am confident that students, staff and community will benefit greatly from this addition."
Doug MacDougall, principal of the school, said, "The new addition and renovations to the existing school are welcomed particularly at a time when enrolment is increasing, a reflection that Miscouche is one of the fastest growing communities in PEI."
"Students, staff and parents are very pleased with the improvements. These changes have expanded the school's capacity to offer comprehensive educational programs, an example being the robotics program in junior high," said MacDougall. "We express appreciation to the Provincial Government and the Western School Board for following through on their commitment, especially given tenders were called just prior to the September 11, 2001 incident. I also acknowledge the outstanding support of Miscouche Home and School members, who have a long history of being an effective voice for the school and community."
Gary Doucette, chairperson of the Western School Board, said, "I would like to express our appreciation to Premier Binns and his government for its fulfilment of a promise made to this community and our Board. Today is a day of celebration not only for the present students, parents and faculty but for all those in future years who will reap the benefits of all those who cared enough to work together to make this happen."
